Supermarket Inquiry - Supporting Small Business

Supporting Small Business

Over the past three months, the Senate Select Committee Inquiry into Supermarket Prices has mulled over the best way to deliver best value for consumers, and fair value at the farm gate.

Of the recommendations adopted by the committee, it was proposed the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 be amended to create divestiture powers specific to the supermarket sector.

Divestment is a key National Party policy position, and, as such, I welcomed the willingness of the committee to consider these powers. These powers exist for the scenario where a supermarket has been found to have misused their market power or engaged in unconscionable conduct.

The Albanese government now has three months to respond to the findings.

In this time, I’ll be continuing to press for a better deal at the farmgate, and a fair go for the consumer. In a cost-of-living crisis, we cannot afford to wait for action from Labor.
